Snippet Tool

The Snippet Tool displays the surrounding text of all matched keywords belonging to a search query.

Last updated 11 months ago

The purpose of the Snippet Tool is to make the targeted reading of matched sentences easy and efficient without having to download the data. As such, it allows users to quickly get insights about the context associated with the matches of a search query.

How to use it

When the Snippet Tool is accessed, it will automatically select the most recent search query and display twenty matched sentences. It sorts earnings calls by date and total number of matches, and first displays sentences from recent and high-weight earnings calls.

By default, the Snippet Tool highlights the parts of the sentences that match the searched topic in light gray. A risk word is highlighted in yellow, a negative sentiment word in red, and a positive sentiment word in green.

The dropdown on the left allows users to select any of the recent searches they have already run on the platform. Users can also select the type of measure that they want to read matched sentences from. For example, by selecting Risk, the Snippet Tool will only display sentences that contain at least one synonym for risk and uncertainty (as well as one topic keyword).

Filter options

Filter by date range`

This menu controls the date range from which sentences are displayed. By default, the Snippet Tool displays sentences from earnings calls held in the last three months of the search period. For example, if the search ends on December 31, 2022, the default date range would be the three months preceding that date.

Filter by country of headquarter

This menu can be used to restrict the sentences to be from companies based in specific countries. Users can start typing one or more characters to get matching countries and then select the relevant country of headquarter.

Filter by sector

Users can filter the sentences to be from companies in certain sectors. This can be done using the English text description of the sector ("Descriptive sector") or the SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) Code for the sector of interest.

Filter by company name

Similar to filtering by country of headquarter, users can type in one or more characters to select a company name to filter sentences by.

Filter by earnings call identifier

Users can also enter the identifier of an earnings call to read sentences only from a particular earnings call. The earnings call identifier (earningscallID) is an identifier specific to NL Analytics that uniquely identifies each document. It can be found in the firm-level CSV files of output from the Risk Tool.
